COVID-19

Dashboard description

This dashboard aims to provide UCSF Health with critical and timely information pertaining to the impact of COVID-19 on our patients and organization in order to inform operational decision making.

COVID-19 testing data is shown on the left side of the dashboard. In the tests per day counts, patients are counted only once per day even if they have multiple tests sent on the same day. COVID-19 test positive graphs counts patients once by their first positive test or last negative test (if never positive).

Hospitalization data is on the right side of dashboard. It represents counts of current (active infection status) COVID-19 positive patients in the hospital and patients that were previously positive at some point during their hospitalization.

Default Settings

By default, the dashboard is configured to display data from all UCSF Health departments and campus locations, for all adult and pediatric populations. UCSF Health campus locations include Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mount Zion and BCH-Oakland. Adult or pediatric attribution is done by classification of patient age or location. Ages < 18 or pediatric locations are designated as ‘Peds’. All others are designated as ‘Adult’.

The filter on the right side of the dashboard, "Hospitalization Campus", represents where the patient was hospitalized and filters the metrics on the right side of the dashboard. The "Testing Department", "Testing Campus", and "Testing Inpatient vs Outpatient" filter the metrics on the left side of the dashboard and represent where the test was sent from, regardless of where the patient is now.

The time range for the data included in this dashboard is limited to Jan 1, 2020 to current date. Although, some of the graphs are limited to show the last 4 months of data due to size constraints.

Dashboard data is updated hourly and is refreshed on the 45min mark of each hour.

Key Definitions and Details

Hospitalizations
If patients have had their COVID-19 positive (confirmed) infection status removed because they have cleared their infection, but they are still hospitalized for other reasons (e.g. awaiting SNF), then they are NOT counted in the "Current Hospitalizations" (center) but they are still counted in “Hospitalizations to Date” (on the right).

"Hospitalizations to Date" are counted according to the highest level of care received at any given campus, for patients who had a COVID-19 positive (confirmed) status set and were thus treated as positive for COVID-19 at some point during the hospitalization. If patients received care at multiple hospitals (e.g.  Parnassus and Mt. Zion) they will be represented in both individual campus counts, but once in the combined site counts by the highest level of care they received overall.

The daily hospitalization histogram represents patients by the highest level of care that they received for any given day, if they had a COVID-19 positive (confirmed) infection status active for any part of that day and, hence, were considered COVID-19 positive. When patients become covid positive after hospitalization, the hospital days prior to diagnosis will also be counted in this histogram. If patients received care at multiple hospitals (e.g. Parnassus and Mt. Zion) they will be represented in both histograms, filtered to the individual campus, by the highest level of care received at that hospital. However, they will be represented once in the combined site histogram by the highest level of care they received overall. If patients were discharged on a given day they will also be represented by the highest level of care they received that day.
